Choosing the Right Way to Get Involved
Every family and volunteer comes to literacy work with different time, skills and goals, so it helps to think about which kind of involvement fits your life before you sign up. A good match makes it far more likely you will stay with it, and consistency is one of the things that matters most for a young reader.
For parents and caregivers
You do not need to be a strong reader yourself to help a child grow as one. Simple habits make a real difference: reading aloud for a few minutes each day, talking about pictures and asking what might happen next, pointing out words on signs and packaging, and letting children choose books that interest them, even if they seem too easy. Family reading nights are a relaxed way to pick up new ideas, meet other families and take home strategies you can use at the kitchen table.
