Reading and Learning Among the Gardens

An outdoor setting can change how a reluctant reader feels about a session. Away from the desk and the classroom, a young learner often relaxes, and the garden itself supplies endless material for conversation, vocabulary and writing. When tutors meet students here, the surroundings become part of the lesson rather than a distraction from it.

Turning the garden into a lesson

Themed gardens are full of words worth learning. Plant labels, seasonal changes and the names of flowers, trees and insects give beginning readers short, real-world text to sound out. Older students can practise more demanding skills. A few simple ideas our tutors find useful:

  • Label hunts: read plant signs aloud, then sort the names by syllable count or starting sound.
  • Observation journals: write three sentences describing a single plant using the five senses.
  • Compare and contrast: walk two different garden areas and talk through how they differ, building descriptive language.
  • Read-aloud breaks: bring a nature-themed picture book or chapter book and read it on a bench nearby.

Practical tips for a visit

Outdoor sessions work best with a little planning. Check the garden's official website before you go for current hours, admission details and any special events that might make paths busy. Memphis summers are hot and humid, so morning or late afternoon visits, water bottles and shade are wise choices. Pack a clipboard, pencils and a sturdy book bag, and keep a backup indoor plan in case of rain or storms.

Families are welcome to try these activities on their own, too. A weekend walk with a notebook can reinforce what a child practises during tutoring.
