Organizing a book donation drive is a great way to support Memphis Striving Readers and promote literacy in our community. Follow these steps to ensure a successful drive:
- Set Your Goals: Determine how many books you aim to collect and the types of books needed.
- Choose a Location: Select a central location where community members can easily drop off their book donations.
- Promote Your Drive: Use social media, flyers, and local community boards to spread the word about your book drive.
- Engage Volunteers: Recruit friends, family, or local organizations to help with the collection and sorting of books.
- Collect and Sort: Gather the books and sort them by age group or genre to make distribution easier.
- Deliver to Memphis Striving Readers: Coordinate a time to drop off the collected books to our program.
Thank you for your support in fostering a love for reading in Memphis. Together, we can make a difference!
Practical Tips for a Drive That Truly Helps Young Readers
A successful drive is measured less by the size of the pile and more by how many books end up in the hands of children who will actually read them. A little planning on quality, timing and logistics makes the sorting stage far easier for everyone involved.
Ask for the right kinds of books
Tell donors clearly what is most useful. Books in good condition, with intact spines and no missing pages, are the ones that can be passed straight to families. Picture books, early readers, chapter books and high-interest titles for older striving readers tend to be in steady demand. Bilingual and Spanish-language books, and stories that reflect the diversity of Memphis neighbourhoods, are often especially welcome. It also helps to say what you cannot accept, such as outdated textbooks, encyclopedias, magazines, or books that are mouldy, heavily marked or water-damaged.
Make dropping off easy
- Use sturdy, clearly labelled boxes or bins, and empty them regularly so they never look overflowing or neglected.
- Place a short sign beside each bin explaining who the books are for and which titles are most needed.
- Pick a host site with reliable opening hours, such as a school office, place of worship or workplace lobby, and confirm permission in advance.
- Keep the drive short, often two to four weeks, so the sense of urgency stays strong.
Turn sorting into an event
Sorting can be a fun group activity. Invite helpers to a sorting session, set up tables by reading level, and keep a separate box for books that need a second look. Light cleaning with a dry cloth and removing old stickers goes a long way. Pack boxes so they can be lifted comfortably and label each one with its age range and an approximate count.
Close the loop with donors
People are far more likely to give again when they hear what happened next. Share a simple thank-you message with the total number of books collected and a reminder of how they support tutoring and family reading nights. If your group would like to stay involved beyond the drive, explore our volunteer opportunities or learn more about the programs your books will support.
